The initiative brings together partners from business, academia, and society with a shared goal: to leverage the location's infrastructure advantages and the extensive hydrogen expertise of local stakeholders to accelerate the transition to a green hydrogen economy in Gelsenkirchen.

Vision
Gelsenkirchen: A Hydrogen Hotspot. Since 1863.
What began with the gas plant of Herbert & Mönting near Gelsenkirchen Central Station and the use of hydrogen for street lighting (“town gas”) in 1863, and continued in 1909 with Germany's first long-distance gas pipeline from the Rhein-Elbe coal mine in Gelsenkirchen to the Wanne-Eickel gas plant, now forms the foundation for entry into the green hydrogen economy and the transformation of industry towards climate neutrality.
Gelsenkirchen’s long-standing expertise in hydrogen spans the entire value chain – from production and transportation to its use in chemical processes or for heat generation in industry. The location also boasts historically developed pipeline networks for electricity, natural gas, coke oven gas, hydrogen, and heat, as well as a university of applied science that has been conducting applied research on hydrogen for more than 20 years.
The initiative "H2GE – Hydrogen Hub Gelsenkirchen" leverages these competencies and location advantages. It brings together partners from business, science, and society to foster the exchange of ideas and the development of projects. As a cooperation platform, the initiative helps accelerate the transition to the green hydrogen economy through collaborative actions and jointly harness the opportunities for value creation, employment, and climate protection.
All companies and institutions active or interested in the field of hydrogen are warmly invited to participate in the initiative.
